Don Welge Memorial Bridge - Connecting Missouri and Illinois across the Mississippi River
Ames Construction crews are making progress on the new Don Welge Memorial Bridge over the Mississippi River between Perryville, Missouri, and Chester, Illinois.
One crew is ascending 170 feet in the air to finalize the first land pylon while another crew is descending 50 feet below the top of river to bring the pylon to its final height of 20 stories above the river.
The Ames Team of Ames Construction and lead engineer Parsons Transportation Group is delivering the new bridge via a design-build contract. The three-tower, 2,900-foot-long, cable-stayed bridge is being constructed upstream from the existing 80-year-old Chester Bridge.
The new structure will be twice as wide as the existing bridge, with two 12-foot-wide lanes and two 10-foot-wide shoulders. The bridge is named in honor of former Chester resident and longtime bridge advocate Don Welge.
