Construction Safety Week
Construction Safety Week is May 6-10, 2024, and this year’s theme, Value Every Voice, helps us highlight the role every Ames Construction team member plays in keeping our projects safe year-round.
May 6 is DRIVING PERSONAL OWNERSHIP.
The construction industry has extensive safety standards, processes, and procedures in place. Yet, serious accidents and dangerous events can occur at any time. Everyone must maintain consistent focus and accept responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others.
This includes intervening whenever we observe unsafe behaviors or conditions. When it comes to unsafe conditions or behaviors, “If you see it, you own it. If you walk by it, you condone it.”
May 7 is ENCOURAGE & WELCOME NEW IDEAS.
When we value every voice, we ensure that every Ames Construction team member has a chance to contribute ideas. Safety isn’t limited to the ideas of the loudest voice on the crew.
Instead, everyone is empowered to ask questions, challenge norms, share different ideas for improvement, and solve problems together. Conversations that include the entire crew lead to better hazard identification and safer work process.
May 8 is EMBRACING EVERY VOICE.
By embracing every voice, we build a culture at Ames Construction that values and hears every team member. When people know that their voice is heard, morale and engagement improve, teams are more productive, and more perspectives are brought into the conversation.
We embrace every voice through open communication, active listening, communicating concerns, encouraging engagement, and conducting follow-ups.
May 9 is STRENGTHEN OUR CULTURE.
Ames Construction’s safety culture is critical to our success. The projects we build are part of our legacy. They’re a sum of work greater than any one of us.
Our people are proud to be able to say “I built that” to their friends and families This kind of pride is bound by the safety culture we establish and the work habits that follow.
May 10 is THANK YOU FOR USING YOUR VOICE.
As Construction Safety Week comes to a close on May 10 at Ames Construction and across the industry, we want to say to our people: THANK YOU FOR USING YOUR VOICE.
Every Ames team member contributes to our safety culture. By welcoming every voice, we develop better solutions and empower teams to prevent incidents together.
Safety is a team effort every day of the year, and everyone has a voice.
