Ames Construction is completing the remaining two sections of the much-anticipated U.S. 74 Shelby Bypass in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Work includes mass grading, utility installation, and the construction of 6.1 miles of roadway, including nine bridges.
To date, Ames’ crews have moved one million cubic yards of materials, began installation of storm drain and water main systems, while performing ongoing erosion control efforts.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation awarded Ames the contract in 2022; work began in 2023. Nearly 80 workers, including 20 subcontractors, are on-site working toward a completion date of 2028, which is one year earlier than initially expected.
Construction on the 18.5 mile four-lane divided highway began in 2013 to alleviate congestion through the Town of Shelby. More than 11 miles were completed in 2020. The highway runs primarily through North Carolina from the mountains to the sea, connecting Asheville, Charlotte, and Wilmington.
