Ames reconstructed two miles of State Route 347 in Maricopa, Arizona, in a multi-year project that included a grade separation to elevate the route over a railway. As the city’s main transportation corridor, SR 347 was often congested because of the at-grade crossing with UPRR. Traffic stopped for passing trains up to 60 times per day.
Ames constructed a new flyover and performed a six-lane realignment of three additional intersections. Project scope included new three-span and one-span precast girder bridges over the railway, three MSE walls, grading, aggregate base and asphaltic concrete, retaining walls, pipe culverts, curb and gutter, sidewalks, signals, and additional traffic control and landscaping elements.
To complement the charm and character of the city, the new flyover features complex bridge columns and a curved structure, producing a signature visual. Ames crews built the custom block-out used to create the columns.
The crossing is a familiar location for Ames. Our crews built the second mainline track for the UPRR Sunset Route in 2008.
