Nevada DOT’s Spaghetti Bowl Xpress (SBX) project targeted the most critical safety and capacity needs of Reno’s outdated I-80/I-580 interchange. With Ames serving as the joint venture's managing partner, crews reconstructed northbound I-580 to accommodate southbound I-580 widening, added three southbound I-580 lanes through the interchange, replaced and/or modified seven bridges along I-580, and made other improvements.
One of the most challenging aspects of the project involved constructing a new bridge over the Truckee River. With environmental requirements prohibiting construction work from entering the river, Ames crews successfully demolished and reconstructed the bridge without any adverse effects to the waterway. The project also included construction of a new bridge over a railway.
Beyond solving safety and congestion issues at the busiest interchange in Northern Nevada, the new construction includes architectural and aesthetic features that are culturally significant to the region’s indigenous population.
