As part of a significant expansion project at the Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP), Ames reconstructed an outbound roadway and plaza to make room for a new 5,000-car parking ramp and on-site hotel.
Construction occurred both landside and airside and included a new tunnel connection for baggage vehicles, a new segmental bridge, a roundabout, retaining walls, two snow melter stations, and roadway reconstruction for outbound traffic. The work scope included concrete structures and cast-in-place tunnel segments, earthwork, rock excavation, and aggregate placement.
The project also included a significant landscaping component designed to reimagine the airport experience with a northern Minnesota theme. Virginia slate stone was selected for use as landscaping material along the stretch of new roadway Ames built for outbound traffic. The striking grayish-black stone is a by-product from former mining sites on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. The stone is an apt representation of the region’s long and productive mining history.
Ames worked closely with its partners to restage and sequence the project to accelerate the schedule. Thanks to the hard work of Ames crews, the project was completed in November 2017—a year ahead of schedule.
