Ames constructed the 400-acre-feet Citrus Reservoir in San Bernardino County, California, performing earthwork, pouring stilling wells and an inlet chute, and crushing aggregate on site.
Ames also produced and placed compacted soil liner, followed by asphalt mastic that was squeegeed over the liner to create a watertight surface. Materials required specifications above ASTM and ACI standards because of the restricted access for maintenance once the reservoir was operational.
Completed several months ahead of schedule, the project was performed in an environmentally sensitive area that is home to the endangered San Bernardino kangaroo rat. This subspecies of the Merriam kangaroo rat is found only in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The animals were captured and relocated to allow for use of the specified right-of-way needed for stockpiles during project construction.
