Ames Construction Interns in California visit UPRR Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal (IEIT) Colton Project

Summer 2024 internships are well underway at Ames Construction, and the interns are getting an insider’s look at diverse aspects of the heavy civil and industrial construction industry.

For their first site visit, Ames interns in Southern California spent a day at the UPRR Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal (IEIT) Colton project. The West Colton Facility is one of Union Pacific’s largest yards in the United States.

Union Pacific’s Senior Director of Locomotive took time from his busy schedule to provide the interns with some great insight on today’s locomotives and lead a tour of the facility’s locomotive repair shop. Thank you UPRR for this valuable experience!

For this intermodal project, Ames is performing grading and drainage, subballast production and placement, and installing air and signal infrastructure to support Union Pacific’s new track and signal construction.

The project includes buildings and structures including a new driver help center, roadability canopy and storage buildings, a new guard house, and several retaining walls. Ames crews are performing utility relocations and constructing new industrial wastewater pipeline infrastructure, major on-site drainage retention pre-cast structures, high-mast site lighting and electrical distribution, paved and unpaved access roads, and laydown areas.
