AKJV Twin Ports Interchange Project Hits 2024 Milestones
Traffic is flowing on the newly constructed interchange between I-35 and I-535 in Duluth, Minnesota.
The northbound and southbound bypasses that connect the interchange to the Blatnik Bridge are also complete and open to traffic.
These are only the latest major milestones for MnDOT’s Twin Ports Interchange Project. The project is a joint venture of Ames Construction and Kramer North America (AKJV). More milestones to look forward to this fall:
• The lower Michigan Street reconstruction is on track to wrap up.
• Ramps from Highway 53 to 21st Avenue will open to traffic.
• The Garfield Avenue reconstruction and drainage work, which began in late August, is set to be complete.
In other areas of the project, structures crews are setting girders on completed substructures, followed by decking. Civil crews are establishing final grades under bridges in preparation for flatwork and slope paving.
Local traffic, commercial vehicles heading to and from the port of Duluth, and Lake Superior vacationers all depend on the Twin Ports Interchange. The joint venture has been reconstructing the interchange, referred to locally as the “can of worms,” since late 2020. The project is improving driver safety, eliminating confusion, and creating more lane continuity for I-35 through-traffic.
